Shuffled and Shifted
My focus for this piece was to create disorientation and unease. I chose a subject that in itself displays directional movement and kept that movement with the broken and reassembled image. This allows for noticeable change in how narrow and fractured the space appears as attention follows the natural motion up. I coupled this with a shift from a clean black and white to a green hue as well as a quick relay time to further evoke a sense of discomfort or illness.
Wayfound
I used many stills for this piece to mirror the many moving parts of the subject. The time designated to the fluctuating pieces as compared to the focused image at the fleeting resolution is meant to be a display of a timely and complex process that lies before a single accomplished end. I chose to utilize direct, midday sunlight to highlight the radiant gold of the wayfinder, giving it a reflective quality. In choosing the image to be the “reward” of the process, I selected a scene with a natural, serene energy, contrasting the mechanical performance that precedes it.
Maria’s Transformation: Metropolis Scene Rescoring
Metropolis (1927), Directed by Fritz Lang
In a project meant to showcase the impact of soundtrack/scoring and sound effects on film, I’ve taken this scene titled “Maria’s Awakening” and rescored it, taking it from an eerie yet whimsical orchestral underscoring typical of the 1920s and replaced it with my own much darker composition of modern, synthetic sounds. In a minor key, with a slow tempo and a deeper range my underscoring is meant to construct a more ominous and wicked atmosphere that seems to better match this scene from my own interpretation of the story.
Cinematic Poem: The Tables Turned
by William Wordsworth
This project was a challenge to take a poem and layer it’s reading with cinematic images to both expand and detail the emotion and aesthetics of the words. A fulfilling practice in poetic analysis, storyboarding, filming, and video editing.
